KINROSS BRASIL
"In 2023, we produced 588,000 oz of gold, equivalent to 22% of the national total."
Could you update us on Kinross Brasil's recent activities?
Our operation in Paracatu, where we have operations in gold research, extraction and processing, makes us the leading gold producer in the country. In step with our Industry 4.0 commitments to autonomous operations, we have introduced Pit Viper 271 drills to our fleet, making us pioneers in Brazil in this technology. The initiative was necessary to meet the mine's need to increase productivity, as we made a significant leap in the increase in processed material. We already use several advanced technologies in the operation, and today, our mine dispatch system has already been consolidated. We are able to monitor production, equipment health and field operator safety in real time on approximately 100 pieces of equipment, such as Shovels excavators, 793 trucks, D11 crawler tractors, drills and other infrastructure support equipment.
In 2023, we produced 588,000 oz of gold, equivalent to 22% of the national total. In terms of production, the Morro Ouro mine already has a high production capacity. We also have a presence in the state of Goiás, where the company has two hydroelectric plants, Caçu and Barra dos Coqueiros, with capacities of 65 MW and 90 MW, which provide much of the energy needs for our operation in Paracatu. Can you assess Brazil's evolution as a tier one-mining jurisdiction for gold mining?
Brazil has been establishing itself as an important region for mining activity globally, not only in traditional minerals but also in those considered strategic due to their economic, technological and industrial importance, such as niobium, lithium and rare earths. In the case of gold, one of the factors that favour investments in Brazil is the fight against illegal mining and the appreciation, by regulatory bodies, the market and society, of legal activity, which generates employment and income, has strict governance criteria and mainly, which adopts sustainable practices and respect for the environment, biodiversity and the populations of the communities in the territories they operate. How is Kinross Brasil prioritizing and strengthening community relations and ESG commitments in Paracatu?
Since the beginning of its operations, Kinross has had a solid commitment to the Paracatu community. Our relationship is based on open, direct and transparent dialogue that results in mutual respect and trust. Our Paracatu 2030 Plan focuses on crucial areas such as education, environment, culture, job, and income generation. Our mission is to contribute positively to the community, support economic and social development, and preserve local culture and the population's well-being. The Integrar Program, our main socio-environmental investment platform, covers essential areas, such as culture, job and income generation, education and environmental education. Since its creation in 2011, we have invested around R$30 million in this program, benefiting approximately 60,000 people. Recently, after more than a decade of projects, we reviewed the program's strategies, expanding partnerships and our operations to ensure greater alignment between actions and the needs of the territory so that we continue contributing to the development of Paracatu.
We are committed to taking concrete action to reduce our emissions and have set ambitious targets in line with the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement. Our commitment includes reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity by 30% by 2030 and striving for carbon neutrality by 2050. In 2018, we acquired two hydroelectric plants in the state of Goiás. These plants provide around 60% of the energy needed for our operation in Paracatu, resulting in a significant reduction of 45% in Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, we adopted initiatives such as optimizing the fleet of 793 off-road trucks and replacing two loaders with diesel engines with electric models. With this, we avoided almost 12,000 t of CO2 emission. This year, we continued our efforts on projects that will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. What are Kinross Brasil's commercial priorities and objectives for 2024/2025?
Our priorities are to continue operating safely and sustainably, focus on operational excellence, solid financial performance, and care for the environment, as well as a lot of dialogue, transparency, and respect for neighbouring communities and contributing to local development. We will remain firm in reducing our carbon footprint, implementing innovative technologies, strengthening local partnerships, and generating value for our shareholders, and we are always committed to responsible and sustainable operations.
